Quartet by Ronald Harwood, director: Jane Rivers
In a retirement home for musicians, three elderly, former opera singers find their peace and monotony shattered by the arrival of a newcomer – a major star in her day and ex-wife of one of the residents.
A gala concert is to be staged at the home to celebrate Verdi’s birthday, with 3 of the 4 keen to re-live their halcyon days by recreating the famous aria from the 3rd act of Rigoletto.
This is a bittersweet comedy that faces up to the issues of mortality and aging, culminating in a rousing, glorious finale.
This play went on to become a successful movie directed by Dustin Hoffman; starring Dame Maggie Smith, Pauline Collins, Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly.
