Event Navigation

The electrifying show RESPECT journeys through Aretha Franklin’s courageous life of love, tragedy and triumph, while showcasing her greatest hits over the last 50 years!

Presented by Australia’s ‘Soul Mama’, Angie Narayan, RESPECT is a masterful piece of storytelling, exploring the Diva’s life through the eyes of her siblings through her unique childhood, church, relationships and the turbulent music industry.

This is a story about family, loyalty and victory, layered with glorious harmonies and sassy repartee.

Joining Angie on stage are accomplished vocalists and actors, Gideon Mzembe, Shelley Davies and Asabi Goodman, together with an energetic band!

A mind, body and soul experience, RESPECT is guaranteed to get you up and out of your seat dancing! You can expect all your favourite hits like ‘Natural Woman’, ’Think’, ‘Say A Little Prayer’, ‘I Knew You Were Waiting For Me’, ‘Son of a Preacher Man’, ‘Chain of Fools’ with many laugh out loud moments!

Angie Narayan is undoubtedly the strongest soul voice that Australia has ever heard. It is easy to understand why Angie continues to captivate audiences, having built a following as worthy as her reputation.

A fierce powerhouse, audiences remember Angie from her Australian Idol performances, where Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickinson accurately bestowed her the ‘Soul Mama’ title which has never left her.

ACT ONE begins with a bang in the 1960s, taking you back in time where Aretha’s career all began. Introduced to Aretha’s family, you explore her childhood, the church, meeting her Manger/ Husband, the Civil Rights Movement, her biggest musical crush and the profound impact the song RESPECT had on the world! ‘Natural Woman’, Say A Little Prayer’ and ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ are just a taste of Aretha’s classics you can expect!

ACT TWO starts off in the 70s, which was a rather turbulent decade with bombed albums, failed relationships and her dear Father being shot. Moving into the 80s, ‘Sisters are Doin it for Themselves’, ‘Freeway of Love’, ‘Everyday People’ are just some of the hits guaranteed to have you up dancing out of your seat! There is one big surprise near the end of the show that no expects but has people literally in tears!

Angie not only sings from the timeless Aretha songbook, but she also sings the praises of a woman who was a powerful figure for feminism and civil rights, in an era of discrimination and racism.

Embodying the spirit of this bold and phenomenal woman, those lucky enough to see Angie perform are raving about the singer’s inimitable channelling of Aretha.

Hold on to your seat as you journey into this earth-shattering Aretha experience that is RESPECT!
